GC Bands - Gold Coast Live Music Scene

G`day groovers, i`ve been thinking recently about personal tastes and being in touch with them, standing up for them. The holidays are over for most and i`ve been playing weekly to the masses of locals, tourists alike and i`m a little freaked by the sameness of most people`s reflex answers and requests. Top 5 songs requested over summer- Mr Jones by Counting Crows, The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, Ke Sahn by Cold Chisel, Too Her Door by Paul Kelly, Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison.
Now most of the time it`s the ladies that are requesting and after a few drinks, most girls i know get into Mr Jones mode, it`s the "sha-la-la-la-la-la-la" bit that does it, but i`m shocked and bummed out that these radio staples are the first instinct of most requesters. I try to be left of centre, i don`t play Mr Jones, i don`t play Ke Sahn and unless there`s the need, i avoid the rest as well, Paul Kelly gets a nod but there`s so many amazing artists and songs that i find it friggin` sad that we`re so dumbed down by commercial radio and tv.
So point is that if you are a left of centre type then maybe you`d dig one of my gigs, you just may hear a version of Martha Wainwrights "bloody motherfucking asshole" or "crown of thorns" by Mother Love Bone. Seen the irish film "Once"? then you may appreciate my rendition of "Falling Slowly" or how about "waltz #2" by Elliot Smith? "Across the universe" by the Beatles or "running to stand still" by U2. Some Pogues? Paolo Nutini? Tracy Chapman? Early Kings Of Leon? Alice In Chains?
My point is, next time you`re out and there`s live music, have a real think about what you want to hear, don`t be afraid of requesting something obscure, it just may make our night, you may introduce the band to a great new artist and visa versa, don`t be afraid to ask what that last song was, music is to be shared, show your true self and stand up for the music that rocks your world.
If you really want "The Gambler", i will play it but you`d better shout along you unimaginative robot!!

do you play Hotel California?

lol - I've never been in a covers band but I used to be a Bouncer and so heard all the same requests as mentioned above. Blister in the sun was also a common request but I'd say Brown Eyed Girl would have to have been top of the list:) (I'm a big Van fan by the way but you can get too much of a good thing!)
