From the moment you see and hear Misdirection, you know there is something unique and very special about this band. It's not one particular thing you can put your finger on, but it's something as real as the sound belting from the stage, as this high energy four piece creates a musical landscape that both soothes your ears while also thumping your chest.
There is no formula, no agenda, and no plan for how the music comes together. It simply arises from the love and passion the boys have for music. Their rehearsal studio is, in essence, a dynamic melting pot of different ideas, influences and inspirations and it is precisely this that produces their unique sound, blending dreamy and uplifting acoustic melodies, classic Australian rock and sometimes darker more intense overtones.
There is no hint of trying to please a certain audience. You won't find a clinically overproduced perfect sound in their recordings, and you certainly won't find overcompensating vocal effects in use, or 12 layers of guitar tracks. Instead, Misdirection know their music and its natural energy do all the talking for them. This, combined with their renowned live performances, have seen them go from strength to strength since they came together in 2004.
Their first release .inertia received rave reviews and its raw and powerful sound saw them amass a huge local following, whipping the crowd into a frenzy with high energy songs such as "Struck down" and "Gravy" while more sophisticated and melodic songs such as "Not Worth It" and "Spiralling" showed there was a great depth to their song writing abilities.
Although suffering some setbacks with line-up changes in 2006, Misdirection rallied and went back into the studio in late 2007 to record their first full length album "Cast No Shadows".
While there is still an undeniable link back to their heavier rock roots with songs such as "Roll With It" and "Scattered", this album marks a deeper and more mature approach to song writing and production. Songs such as "Spanna", "Sweet Emotion", and the crowd favourite "Play" enable Misdirection to transcend genres and all boxy stereotypes, making it just about playing good ol' fashioned music!
The release of "Cast No Shadows" in October 2008 has seen the boys attract the local support of Helmet, Shihad and the Screaming Jets as well as scoring a spot on the 2009 Big Day Out on the Gold Coast with national tours to Melbourne, Sydney and Northern QLD to follow in early 2009.
Musical and artistic integrity, as well as the love and appreciation for the fans will always be at the heart of Misdirection and although only time will tell what lies ahead for the boys, the future is looking bright and in the journey, the battle is already won!
