About me:
Paul Hannan and Louise O’Reilly befriended in a rambling, old, falling down share house in Brisbane’s West End. Many moons later they reconnected in Melbourne. Both came from different musical backgrounds: Hannan had been the front man of numerous prominent Brisbane bands; O’Reilly revealed a self-taught guitar and voice that she’d wrought together during an extended stay in Cape York. But they bonded over a crossing of eclectic folk and country traditions – their album collections became one – and they started playing songs together. As Laneway, the pair’s enviable and relaxed attention to old and new combines a love of harmony, a touch of psychedelia and a pop sensibility.
Imagine Lindsey Buckingham and Gillian Welch meeting in a down town pool hall, setting off on a road trip and stopping only for tea, oranges, creek swims and tequila; Laneway is a journey of two guitars and voices heading out country that has an immediate familiarity that jumps out at you on first listen, before the incredible depth of songwriting sinks in.
Their debut album, If You Don’t Need It Let It Go has been received with a warm and rippling response. Its gentle release through their own label, Crawler Records, generated much acclaim. And unlike many releases whose fires burn out – this album’s accolades seem only to grow with time. Formerly an acoustic harmony based duo, O’Reilly and Hannan expanded their sound for their first record. Recorded at Head Gap in Melbourne with Brent Punshon, Laneway was joined in the studio by some dear and talented friends, Tom Butts (True Live) and Fingers Malone (The Fingers Malone Ensemble, Sex Fox Six).
In 2010 Laneway moved on out of the city and headed to the forest in the hills. From here O’Reilly and Hannan raise their son, run their label, grow some veggies and when they are lucky, catch songs that come their way.

To kick off 2011 O’Reilly and Hannan have again teamed up with Fingers Malone this time for the recording of the single The Turbine. It is the first exciting glimpse of what is to come off their much-anticipated second album later in the year. Penned during the Great Rains of January 2011 in the forest at the Natural Bridge the ballad is an ode to green power and a black sky. It was recorded with Matt Redlich in East Brisbane as the river outside found its peak during the floods. A swirling harmony from Brisbane’s Cori and haunting slide solo from Redlich are beautiful touches.
Both O’Reilly and Hannan have a strong resonance with the old folk tradition that songs deserve to be played live. Over the last few years they’ve taken many opportunities for refine their performance style. Laneway have performed live across the east coast and they are no strangers to festivals. Winners of the Whittlesea Country Music Festival’s Best Duo Talent, headliners of the Brunswick 11 Spanish Angels City Country Music Festival and a part of music programs at Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts & Music Festival, Tablelands Folk Festival, Soundings Showcase Festival, Ukitopia & Mullum Music Festival, Laneway are establishing a diverse and growing fan base. O’Reilly & Hannan’s live to air performances on Melbourne PBS, ABC Local's Coast FM and Brisbane's ZZZ radio stations have reached out to listeners across the airwaves. They are most keen to share their sound with listeners in the flesh, and a Laneway show in either full band or duo arrangement is not to be missed.
