GC Bands - Gold Coast Live Music Scene

So I've skimmed god knows how many topics here lately all bitching about the scene (or bitching about bitching about the scene), and people throwing out huge ideas to fix things and so on. And the solution is so goddamn simple I'm ashamed of so many people I know for not realising it, even some of my best friends.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- I can guarantee a massive kick start to the scene with one easy step- get out to a goddamn show! It's simple. 99% of people I hear bitching about the lack of scenes are people I DO NOT see going out to watch bands.

It really is that simple. If you arent going to at least one local gig a week, fuck, even a gig each fortnight, shut the fuck up. There is no need for any revolutions, we just need participation.

So heres a challenge- name 10 local bands you have seen this year. If you can list a measly 10 bands you've seen in this whole year, then I consider you to be part of the solution. If you can't, don't bother talking to me about supporting local music. A couple rules though- 1) it doesnt count if you were on the same bill, I mean bands you actually went out specifically to see, and 2) they must have been separate shows (i.e. don't list 4 bands that you saw all in one night)

To put my money where my mouth is....

1. Lebelle
2. The Sea Shall Not Have Them
3. Jackson Dunn
4. Isaac Paddon & The Tides
5. Karl Williams
6. Abby Skye
7. Tim Pitchford
8. The F1-Elevens
9. Servants Of Stone
10. Hang Em High

... and I'm barely scratching the surface of bands I've seen this year here. Shit, I've probably seen more than half of those acts in the last 2 months alone, some multiple times. And as I said, that doesn't include doing shows myself with them.

Let's take it a step further. Which venues have you actually bothered to go to this year? I know there's not many on the coast, so let's go with 5 venues you've been to this year (again, not venues you've played but venues you actually went to so you could see some bands).

My 5 are......

1. The Shark Bar
2. The Hard Rock
3. The Loft
4. Waxy's
5. Brannigans

So I throw this challenge to all the whiners. If you've bitched about the industry/scene/venues etc, step up and prove you aren't the problem. I'm all ears with anyone who is ACTUALLY a part of the scene. Shit, I HATE a lot of things about the GC music scene. But I feel qualified to discuss it cause I'm actually out there taking part in it. I'm out there at every chance I get because I LOVE music. If you love music too, then either this challenge should be easy, or there's a very good chance you're full of shit about supporting the scene.

Prove me wrong.

luke....i think your forgetting that festivals massively suck. and there mainly full of cops and drug addicts who have little to no appreciation of real music!!!!
We just lost another night of live, original music on the coast today. Wanna take a wild stab at why? No? OK, I'll give you a hint.

NOBODY WAS GETTING OFF THEIR ASSES TO ACTUALLY GO WATCH THE BANDS, AND NO VENUE IS GOING TO PUT ON BANDS IN EMPTY ROOMS

I rest my friggen case. You can keep adding up one and one and insisting it makes 3, or you can face facts. There is no scene without participation.
You guys are so negative…its no wonder the local music scene is up to shit. If the local bands can’t even have faith in organising something positive how is anything going to work. I bet if you were offered to play at the big day out you wouldn’t decline. Let’s start suggesting new ideas obviously just telling people to start going out to support local music isn’t working. Brisbane isn’t much better either when it comes to supporting new local acts. To make it in this business lets face it you just need to write fuckin great songs.
The local music scene is shit because of us?
What have you ever done for the local scene!!!
The big problem is the gold coast is full of fucking idiots that dont know anything outside of top 40 pop.
And the powers that be would like to keep it that way.
People need to get out and support the gigs. It wont happen over night, but it will work.....

Ps..... i write fucking great songs
I really don't get how we are "negative". I'm out there watching shows, organising shows, helping out at shows and buying local records. And I'm having a great time doing it, so that feels pretty positive to me. Meanwhile you're arguing about imaginary festivals to save the scene that you don't even seem to be part of given the fact that you've yet to step up to the challenge of listing any bands you've bothered to go and support. Call me insane but to me that's the downer.

I mean seriously, have you ever even bought a locally made record (no, burning a copy of a mates demo is not the same as throwing some hard earned cash to a band for a CD)? Have you helped to promote other bands shows instead of just your own? Have you introduced any of your friends to the music of any local artists? Roadied for any other bands?

If you want to stand by your argument that a festival is the answer, more power to you, provided you take the initiative and make it happen. Anyone can fire off suggestions but if they don't have the stones to act on those ideas they are nothing more than posers. Whether right or wrong, I've lived by my own advice about how to make a better scene, day in and day out for years. If you're going to put your money where your mouth is and get this festival idea happening, that's awesome. If you're not, then you ought to take a good hard look at what exactly you're contributing to music on the Gold Coast.
i love ya uncle dave, but i agree. you guys are being soooo negative, i dont understand why you would knock someone for having a fun and positive idea. i dont think baggin the gc music scene every 3 seconds is doing anything positive for it. watch 'the secret' you downers, get that diamond ring in the window. haha.
"Uncle Dave", haha. Have you seen little Emily yet? She's pretty awesome!

I don't see it as negative at all. It's a simple question of what people are doing to improve the scene. Not what they're THINKING about doing, not what they COULD do, but what they ARE doing. As I said, if Taorn decides to run with a festival, I think that's great and admirable whether or not I agree that it will change things for the better. It would at least be an attempt and I'll always be a fan of people having a crack at improving things. But I don't have a second of time for talkers, and in the music scene there are PLENTY of talkers who never lift a finger to make things happen.

So yeah, the whole point of this thread was that people need to put their money where their mouth is and get active instead of day dreaming and wishing the scene was better. Whether they get active the way I think they need to or any other way doesn't matter, as long as they are actually doing it and not just backseat driving. I know I'm putting in the hard work. I know others in this thread like Stalkz in real life who are out there selflessly contributing to and participating in the local scene with blood, sweat and tears. If we come across negative it's because we're sick of hearing musicians who don't pull their weight bitch about the local scene
P.S. I will NEVER watch "The Secret" haha. I've had heaps of friends try to tell me how great it is, but to me the "secret" is that there is no secret, people just need to work hard. Nothing worth having comes without effort
Game....Set....Match
Thanks for the support Keeks! here I am simply putting forward an idea to try and get help from local band members & all I get is bad feedback. What I was after was hopefully a positive attitude suggesting other alternatives & trust me there are plenty of things to try. By the sounds of it these guys wouldn't go even if you paid them to go to support a local festival. I'm far from just being a poser or talker, I have done plenty to support the music scene on the gold coast. You guys don't know anything about me or what I've done to contribute to the music culture here. 15 years I've been here writing & playing original music & probably one of the hardest working muso you will come across. I've played at many venues including the playroom, Beer Garden, RoseNCrown, Cooly, Shark Bar, Swell, Fishos, Mermaid Tav & the troc back in the days. Music is what I live for & I contribute most of my time writing new songs on average 40 a year & this doesn't give me much more time to try and also promote our music, work full time & spend time with my family. So from a muso at heart I am asking for all positive musicians out there to get together & start working towards ideas to help encourage the live music scene for new upcoming artists.

TAORN
Sorry, what exactly do you want? A pat on the back for coming up with ideas that you expect other people to take care of for you?? Seriously??? We're supposed to be positive about you coming up with ideas that you want us to get off the ground for you to come and play??

Playing at venues and writing 40 songs a year (your point??) is not the same as supporting the scene. It's actually being supported by the scene in fact. 2 of the venues you mentioned don't even exist any more, and at least 2 of them don't pay original bands for performances. But I'm sure you knew that, being an avid supporter of the live local music scene. So if the local music culture is that screwed, it shouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to understand why anyone would be hesitant to put up the tens of thousands of dollars it costs to put on a festival. I mean come on, are you going to put your ass on the line to make it happen? $20 says no. So here we are again, with a pile of talk and no action. Congratulations.
What do I want? well what I would like is positive musicians out there to get together & start working towards ideas to help encourage the live music scene for new upcoming artists. I'm not asking for anyone to get it off the ground for me Dave I'm simply asking for help from anyone who has an open mind. If you were a little more creative & open minded you might even come up with a few yourself. I definitely don't need your help mate....
