GC Bands - Gold Coast Live Music Scene

Wow !!!!   What a couple of weeks. 2 heats down and I must admit, I remember why I set this up in the first place.  Their is a resurgance guys to rebuild the original music scene in SE Qld and I am happy to drive it. The bands that won the first 2 heats....   MOLOTOV and MAYAN FOX  (both awesome) understand this is a numbers game, and we must prove revenue (bar takings) to venues to make this happen. It is a 2 way street. No one owes us anything..... If we can make original bands commercially viable we will get the shows, and by this I dont mean shows where you play for nothing with shit production, but paying, professional gigs. Every band that has played in my Battle of the Bands can testify that there has been no expense spared on quality production (bands, please feel free to comment and support this statement) and this is what ALL BANDS DESERVE. But, on saying this, the punters must vote with their feet so we can up the bar takings for the venues so we can show them a return on their investment. Its the music business guys, not the music charity. MOLOTOV,MAYAN FOX, REMEDY have shown me so far that they understand this, and that is why I have phone calls wanting to book them already. To all the bands that are still coming to play in the Wallaby Battle of the Bands, I emplore you.... bums on seats guys. To all the fans of original music in SE Qld...please come along. These events and the future of original music in QLD needs your support.    THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE AIR PEOPLE.... HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Good on you mate... Your post really sums up the GC music scene...
Really enjoyed the heats i have been too so far at Wallaby Hotel... (Heats#1 & 2). We really enjoyed participating in HEAT#2 with REMEDY was great to take out the 'Judges award' for Heat#2. Unfortunately i'm unable to attend agauin next week due to having gigs booked all next weekend BUT if i didn't have the work on I WOULD BE THERE to support the quality acts that are participating in the competition.

I am really looking forward to participating again in Heat#4 with our ORIGINAL band "Winston Chariott" on the 17th of April. Hoping you can make it to The Hard Rock Cafe on Thursday night 8th of April 10.30pm too catch our set...

Cheers for the support Andy... Mikey Edwards ( Winston Chariott & REMEDY)

Your comments are absolutely spot on mate. I love original music and came to hear the bands in the first heat. I don't know who is on the judging panel, but you've hit the nail on the head re: bums on seats. The judging was clearly based purely on numbers, rather than talent, musicianship or song writing skills.
I got to the 1st heat as well Jeneva and was really disappointed when neither of the 2 bands that I was supporting went through even though I thought they deserved to. I'm sure there was probably some bias in those thoughts though and I can't begrudge the winning band their spot in the finals considering the crowd they pulled. As for the set well it might not have been something that I would normally get in to but a packed house told me that I was in the minority and that this band was putting on a killer show despite my reservations.

Though I hate to see a comp run where audience reaction is the heaviest factor I do think that it needs to be a part of the total judging for a couple of reasons.

1. Because music is highly subjective and judges are just as prone to having specific tastes as any of the punters, the audience involvement helps to ensure that judge bias isn't a factor. Also if the judges have a deadlocked score sheet then what better way to determine the winning band than with a 'bums on seats' count. It may not be ideal but probably the most fair way that I can think of.

2. Self-promotion is a major contributor to success as a band and a part of a band's total 'package'. This is a package that also includes saleability, originality, and most importantly as you noted, musicianship and song-writing skills. Though it would be awesome if every great muso had a 'shot' despite their promotional abilities, the world is so choked up with musos vying for a spot on the podium that promotion is a huge factor in finding success.

Lastly, I just want to say that though our own band had sworn off band comps after a couple of bad experiences (terrible sound, prizes not forthcoming) for some reason we took a chance on this one. Unlike our friends in other bands who may have been unlucky not to get through, I thought we were lucky to get through but even if we hadn't we still would have walked away having had a great time. We also found the engineering to be up there with the best and every band loves that feeling of walking off the stage knowing that the audience got the best sound they could hope for.
I've got to say also that I've seen some comps award anywhere from 50 - 70% of points from audience reaction so 35% is not too unreasonable (and we were told beforehand).

Also, the bands that I know who didn't get through are still going to go on to HUGE success.
Hey man I'm sure every fellow band member of this site feels the same when reading this, I'll assume the heats are over but if not our band would be interested in playing this or any upcoming events.
Cheers Mate

Max,
In the middle of organising the second one now. The first was won by Nuts, Raccoons and Dragons and both them and Mayan Fox have been rebooked and played encore shows. I have also booked Mayan Fox for my Coomerocks festival on June 13th (see gig guide) I will be taking bookings for the next one soon so watch the site for more details....

Cheers, Andy OSM
