Band Comps = Great, Audience Judgement the Decider = Not So Great

We've been 'invited' to participate in a Battle of the Bands which initially sounded like a good prospect. The fee is a bit extravagant ($100) but the prizes are really enticing. The problem as I see it is that for the first 2 rounds there are no judges persay but rather the winning band is voted in by the audience. I would hate to risk $100 and have another band bring in 1 extra friend. I'd also hate to think that an amazing band that is still new and building a fan base lost out to a 7 piece band that sounded like mud but had a big family and friend network.

How can a comp really think of itself as legitimate when there are no real judges picking apart the band using certain criteria such as Stage Presence, Musical Ability, Originality, etc.? I understand that Audience Participation should also be a valid criteria but not the sole decider.

Yeah, audience voting should be a factor but only a certain percentage, unbiased judges that factor in originality, talent, potential, entertainment, etc should be the primary panel. Let's face it, straight up voting got us George Bush & John Howard for nearly a decade which proves it ain't that good an idea ;-)
cheers

I guess the venues are just worried about bums on seats.

I can def see where you're coming from though.
yeah i agree mayan.
p.s. what was the relevance of brett hit man image? haha
No relevance in the 'Hitman!' I was just trying to be cool by association! It's not working:)

I know the venues are concerned with bums on seats and that's understandable. I just question the events right to claim itself as an unbiased competition when there's no definitive criteria and no real judging panel.

Australian Idol works on that system.

Okay they're primarily about ratings and hell that's okay, (poor ratings = shelved show) but when (now here's some first hand anectodal evidence), a singer who won outright another television talent show the very next year, the youngest singer to ever get accepted into WAPA, a girl who was top Queensland singing student for Trinity music in her Performance Cert (post grades), all got rejected in their very 1st round (note that it's the 3rd round - or at least it was a few years ago, before you even face the television judges), and yet many, many really BAD singers DO get through to the television rounds just seems a little off to me.

Man that last sentence was too long and very poorly constructed!

Anyway, as I was saying, I understand the reasons for these popularity contests but just don't think that they should be glorified to be anything more than that.

Ps. none of those Idol applicants were me:) I'm not a disgruntled reject!
